Tonight, the Federal Government has handed down a budget with a range of measures that could have positive implications for the automotive industry. The intent of these measures appear positive, however, more detail is needed to understand whether they will meet the specific needs of our industry.

In accordance with Rule 23(2a) of the Rules of the Motor Traders’ Association of New South Wales (the Association) the President has directed the Chief Executive Officer to convene a Special General Meeting of the Association.

MTA NSW has recently been informed of some concerns raised by Motor Dealers including some other states about the Outstanding Recall feature that was extended on PPSR search other than the original Takata Air Bag recall. Australian Financial Security Authority (AFSA) informed that participating Motor Dealers (MD) enrolled and using the PPSR were notified in mid-January 2023 that additionally when conducting a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) search on the Personal Property Security Register (PPSR). That the additional feature would allow for a person who conducted a PPSR search to also be informed if that vehicle has an outstanding manufacturers recall.

MTA NSW's Head of Government Relations and Advocacy attended a committee hearing in Canberra to discuss the adoption of electric vehicles in the ACT and highlighted the need for affordable electric vehicles and a trained automotive workforce to meet the Territory's ambitious targets. The MTA NSW representative also met with several Ministers to discuss upskilling the ACT automotive workforce.

The Motor Trades Association of Australia (MTAA) has successfully collaborated with the Federal Minister for Skills and Training, The Hon. Brendan O’Connor, to simplify the skills assessment process for migrants seeking to work or move to Australia. In a series of meetings, MTAA representatives discussed with the minister and his advisors about the automotive industry's significant skills shortage and the impact on member businesses.

Shadow Minister for Energy and Climate Change, Jihad Dib, spoke to the Governing Council on Friday about the critical role of the automotive sector in the transition to electric vehicles.

On 7th February, 2023 the Shadow Minister for Skills, Tim Crakanthorp, visited the MTA NSW headquarters to learn about our apprenticeship training programs and discuss the importance of electric vehicle safety training. The recently established EV safety training program has been put in place to educate the industry as it makes it shift towards EVs.

Collin Jennings, Head of Government Relations and Advocacy recently met with Mr Paul Scully MP, Shadow Minister for Planning and Public Spaces to discuss the rollout of EVs and cutting red tape for automotive businesses in the planning space in NSW.
